US$16.55 million loan from IFAD to Sri Lankan government

A loan totaling US$16.55 million has been given to Sri Lanka by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) allegedly to help rural families whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed by the Tsunami.

There is currently no mechanism for equitable distribution of international aid across the Tamil home land of North-East.

The districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mulaiteevu where over 1/3rd of the 30,000 deaths in Sri Lanka occurred have been left out of the program.

Several complaints have been made by Tsunami affected civilians against widespread corruption and ethnic discrimination in the distribution of aid by government officials.
