Tension prevails in Jaffna



A tense situation prevailed across the Jaffna peninsula after the murder of two civilians by the Sri Lankan Army Intelligence.

Shops remained closed and civilians held protests in front of the several checkpoints set up by the occupying forces.

Jaffna district is home to over a million Tamils who comprise 99.5% of the population of the district. The peninsula had been under the occupation of an estimated 40, 000 Sri Lankan Army Soldiers for almost 10 years. Several massacres, rapes and random incidence of murders have been reported across the peninsula during this period.
