Hardliner wins Sri Lanka presidential elections.

The hard line Mahinda Rajapakse has been declared the 5th president of Sri Lanka. Mr. Rajapakse who hails from the leftist Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) had to forge alliances with the Marxist Sinhala extremist party (JVP) and the all monks Buddhist extremist party (JHU) in order to secure his simple majority of just over 2%.

It is feared that the extremist coalition’s stances of not sharing foreign aid with Tamil Tsunami victims and promises to break away from the federalist solution being promoted to end the 25 yearlong ethnic conflict may lead the country into another war.
